The First Shadows of Morning by Timothy Noble is primarily the story of Alex, a young executive who has been sent from his company in England to Ukraine to fix a company that they own and is in trouble. When Alex arrives, he is surprised by the corrupt gangs and police force. He also finds himself in love with Irina, a beautiful young girl. When an explosion rips apart his factory he finds himself faced with many decisions and it is up to him to find the answers. Alex and Irina met at a party, had sex, and soon found themselves expecting a baby. They marry and start their lives together but things quickly change and Alex is faced with more problems and more decisions.
The action never stops and rapidly moves from one disaster to the next throughout The First Shadows of Morning. The reader is given a very clear picture of the government and Russian forces battling; conditions in Ukraine; love and family ties and so much more. While there is violence and sex, it is not to the point of offensiveness but is a natural part of the story. I believe that Timothy Noble has done a lot of research and is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Ukrainian history. The characters are very real and most are very likable. The First Shadows of Morning can be enjoyed by history and thriller/suspense fans, both male and female, as there is something for everyone that makes it an excellent reading choice.
