The Forest’s Eyes: Threads of Deception by Ruben Elustondo is a gripping crime mystery. Tom Kharman, an accounting manager at The Sunset Hotel, discovers that the hotel’s high income does not match its low occupancy. He interviews a receptionist and a reservations officer about the hotel’s occupancy and discusses his findings with his boss, but they all fail to assuage his concerns. Tom suspects that the hotel is a front for money laundering. Worried about his own and his family’s safety, Tom resigns. Soon after his resignation, Tom learns that he is entitled to part of his late father's multimillion-dollar estate. Suddenly, his lover is brutally murdered. Before long, Tom dies when a truck hits his car. But who murdered them and why?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ruben Elustondo’s The Forest’s Eyes. I liked how the storyline interlaced murder mystery and family drama. First, Tom’s investigation of the hotel’s accounts and then the police investigation of Tom’s and his lover’s deaths kept me turning the pages. I liked the realistic portrayal of the characters, with their good and bad traits, making it difficult to solve the mystery. I also enjoyed the surprise of the unexpected ending. But it was Tom’s widow who resonated with me most because of her compassionate, strong character, wit, and love for her children. I highly recommend this captivating murder mystery to crime thriller and family drama fans. In addition, law enforcement and other professionals in anti-money laundering procedures will find this book interesting.
