The Genesis of Janus by Brad Anderson is a science fiction, time travel thriller that follows in the spirit of its predecessors in The Janus Project Files series. It reads comfortably as a standalone and is easy to follow regardless of where in the series you start, but leading the charge with book one, The Janus Project, and book two, When is Sylvia Wallace?, is definitely the best route. The Genesis of Janus is something of a prequel, with DEA Special Agent Rob Mackie offered a position in a top-secret witness protection program, transporting endangered witnesses through a portal and hiding them in an alternate time period as opposed to just another location in the same timeline (which is current, in this book). Having been legally declared dead after a string of successful suits with the DEA, Rob comes out of hiding to join Janus. Unfortunately for him and his family, his anonymity is short lived.
Brad Anderson takes a wholly unique concept and brings it to life in The Genesis of Janus, and it is spectacular to read. For me the idea of utilizing time as a way to hide individuals and families in the witness protection program is enough to get me past the cover, but the writing itself and Anderson's execution far exceeded my expectations. Rob is an easy character to root for and the dialogue is authentic and often really funny, particularly his internal thoughts which allow for greater insight into an already awesome protagonist. Overall, this is an exceptional novel and I would enthusiastically recommend it to all who enjoy the best of this genre.
