The Glass Coffin Society by Shiromi Arserio is an exciting tale that unfolds in Märchen, a city-state teeming with magic, danger, and corruption. The story begins after an auction heist led by Samara, an ex-Hisada assassin enforcer. She and her gang of thieves and misfits successfully free a young girl, Eloise, from the hands of powerful crime lords. Eloise is magically gifted and of royal lineage. Unfortunately, no good deed goes unpunished, and in light of their recent actions, Samara and her crew are hunted by rival gangs, assassins, and a dangerous mob boss. This results in harrowing outcomes for them all. As assassins close in, a covert organization, called the Order of Grimm, secretly pulls the strings from behind the scenes. In the interim, the city’s underworld begins to collapse. Samara must find the strength to face her enemies and protect her friends. Can she?
The Glass Coffin Society by Shiromi Arserio is an immersive story that blends fantasy, crime, high-stakes situations, and deeply moving moments. Samara and her friends feel real and identifiable as characters, even in a world filled with danger and uncertainty. They all have complex backstories and personal struggles and are forced to rely on their wits to survive in a city brimming with moral decay and disloyalty. The author does an outstanding job of portraying these complex aspects of the novel without losing the reader's attention. Themes like resilience and redemption run throughout the book, drawing me deeper into the experiences of each central character. I admire how the world of Märchen feels alive, with its laws and politics that fascinatingly shape the narrative. The world-building and creative depth that went into this novel can be felt on every page. It is a must-read for fantasy lovers everywhere.
