The Gnomes of Fibberton by Becky Bell gives young readers a glimpse into the hidden underground world that only a few know exists, called Fibberton. It’s a bit of a dreary place where grouchy little gnomes, who creep around in the shadows, complete their strange task that connects them to the world above. They’re in charge of keeping track of and collecting little ones’ fibs. Every time a child tells a lie, like stretching the truth about completing chores or deceptively sneaking treats, they eagerly take it. They don’t see untruths as harmless slips; they’re more like shiny little tokens they can stash away and keep score of with the ultimate prize at stake. With charming language and playful illustrations, this imaginative tale brings to life a very important concept: honesty matters. This enchanting tale reminds everyone that even though those magical creatures might be keeping score, honesty is always best.

I really enjoyed reading The Gnomes of Fibberton by Becky Bell, and I found it to be a creative book that gives kids a more concrete reason not to lie. Instead of being told that fibbing is wrong, which is what typically occurs, children can imagine those grouchy inhabitants who snatch each fib and keep track of them. It’s quite clever. As an educator, I think it could get students thinking and talking about topics like what honesty means to them, why people sometimes stretch the truth, and how even small falsehoods can add up. It’s also easy to visualize follow-up activities to extend the story, such as keeping a “truth journal” or designing their own gnome characters who gather a silly treasure, like giggles. Humor and details are added in the artwork by Aadil Khan, allowing learners to connect even further with it. It’s a fun story that sneaks in a valuable lesson; a book that belongs in the classroom and home libraries for young readers.
