The Great Deceiver by Andrew Cormier is about a man who tells us his life story in his own words in an effort to explain how things went so terribly wrong. As a young child, he suffered the embarrassment of low income living and being bullied at school, to losing the only friend he'd ever really had once the family moves to Chicago. But the move brings financial gains, and the young man learns that diligent studying in school and hard work are what get you out of the bad part of town. He goes on to college and applies himself wholeheartedly to his law studies. Once he graduates, he relocates to Florida to work with a respected law firm. Once he marries his long-time sweetheart, he truly feels life is finally good, made only better when they have their first child- a son. After a few years pass, though, an empty restlessness begins to set in, and his peace and happiness seem to have disappeared. One day, the words of his mother come back to him and he realizes perhaps she was right. They join a local church and he feels a measure of peace return. He's happy helping people out and volunteering at the church. The sudden death of his wife and son in a car accident leaves him devastated, and he questions his faith. Mired in grief, he makes a decision that changes his destiny forever, and fulfills another that he really should have paid more attention to in church.
The Great Deceiver by Andrew Cormier is an interesting and rather unique twist on the age-old battle of good versus evil. Told strictly from the first person perspective, all eyes are on this unnamed man as his life unfolds. Mr. Cormier did an excellent job in building the events through this man's life that ultimately lead to his downfall. Though you never know his name, he definitely comes alive for you as his thoughts are clearly spelled out every step of the way. The events of his “afterlife” are also quite vivid, and one can clearly imagine what a horrid place Hell really is. While this story is almost strictly narrative through a good deal of the book, it is definitely gripping enough that you won't even realize it. Once he gets to Hell, there is plenty of talk as the demons torment the souls of the fallen. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good story.
