The Guardians: Inheritance by Rebecca Rock is an engaging urban fantasy with a beautiful setting in Seattle. Nico Means is a native of the Seattle area and part Chinook Indian, and just like many kids his age, he has heard stories about Sasquatches and seen the creatures in drawings. His first encounter with one had been at a picnic when he was eight and he had never forgotten about this creature of myth, not even as a Seattle SWAT sharpshooter. While investigating the death of his father, Nico comes into contact with these creatures and discovers a family secret that has been hidden from him for years. In fact, his father was a Guardian, an intergalactic police officer sent to Earth to stop creatures of myth from invading it. When these creatures attack his SWAT team, he has no choice but to join the war. Things escalate, pulling his family into the fray when the Sasquatches kidnap his girlfriend. But can they free her unscathed and save Seattle?
Rebecca Rock’s writing is beautiful not only because her narrative is wildly inventive, but because she keeps it real, creating characters that are deeply human and flawed, characters that are challenged to face their fears and to grow. From the picnic at Mt. Rainer to the explosive climax of this narrative, the reader is compelled to believe every aspect of the story. Nico has depth, as well as the other characters in the story. The writing is simply gorgeous and I love this author’s sense of economy when it comes to diction. The narrative is sprinkled with dialogues with the feel of real conversations. The story is filled with action, has the emotional depth that makes for a great connection between readers and characters, and a plot that is moved by a powerful conflict. The Guardians: Inheritance is a delightful read, a story with a strong premise, suspenseful, and written to a satisfying denouement.
