The Hollywood Backlash Moon by Carolyn Summer Quinn revolves around Katie, an orphan raised by her uncle Trent and his wife Floriana in California. Katie forms a close bond with her cousin Clover, whose acting aspirations incite jealousy in Floriana. Hostility erupts when Clover lands a major film audition, leading to a massive argument and Clover's abrupt departure. After Clover is found dead near Stone Canyon Reservoir, suspicion and fear grip those who knew her. At Grand Manor Studios, Katie's colleagues discuss sightings of Nazi Ludwig Dietzel, causing alarm among Holocaust survivors Eva, Anton, and Willi. As the police investigation into Clover's death continues, Katie starts piecing together her own theories while her colleagues, who are hunkered down at Anton's palazzo, fear fallout as Deitzel's threats progressively escalate.
The Hollywood Backlash Moon offers Katie as the amateur sleuth in the mystery of Clover's murder, as well as the confidante to two Hollywood icons whose fathers were murdered in Nazi Germany, and another whose family's shop was destroyed under the same circumstances. For a young woman who has experienced great losses in her life, Katie marches on with a remarkable clarity of mind. Carolyn Summer Quinn's characters are well defined, particularly Floriana, who is so evil that were she a man she'd be twirling a mustache in the corner, and the aura surrounding Deitzel hardly needs explaining. The writing itself is simple and straightforward and the dual plots allow for the pieces to move around without revealing too much too fast. As a California native, I naturally enjoyed the setting, which has the benefit of its characters being directly associated with the entertainment industry, and found the book overall to be a good holiday read.
