The Hunted Rose is a work of short fiction in the Good Tales for Bad Dreams series of reimagined fairy tales by V.M. Sawh. Inspired by characters from the European fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood but set in occupied France in 1940, it follows the horror-filled journey of a 17-year-old Jewish girl named Rose whose father was murdered by the Nazis as she watched from a hiding place in their cottage. Seeking the whereabouts of French resistance fighters, the Nazis head into the woods in the direction of Rose’s grandmother’s cottage. Determined to warn both her grandmother and the French fighters, Rose takes off after them, encountering a man-eating wolf and a strange hunter along the way. Will Rose reach her grandmother in time?

In The Hunted Rose, V. M. Sawh gives us a modern tale in which Rose’s “red riding hood” style cloak gets its color from being drenched in human blood, and neither the wolf nor the hunter is who or what they appear at first to be. For a short work, the main characters are wondrously drawn with enough backstory to make their actions and emotions believable. The narrative moves at a good pace and is engagingly written with plot twists and suspense at every turn. This is one of those stories you don’t want to put down until you get to the end. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next and being utterly surprised as the storyline unfolded.
