The Hunted by Steven Max Russo is an espionage thriller about a former covert operative named Ophelia Harris, who is living under several false identities. She is also being hunted by professional killers tied to her past at Grendel Security Group. Stemming from a deadly Afghanistan mission involving The Ghost of Garmsir, missing cash, and a possible betrayal, Ophelia may hold the truth behind the pursuit. But what are the odds that she meets former Ranger Austin Medford at the airport, and he recognizes her from Afghanistan? They become unlikely allies as the story begins to uncover a deeper conspiracy. Before long, the pursuit is peppered with espionage and corruption.
Steven Max Russo has created one of the best thrillers I have read, layered with twists. Each chapter had different levels of action that pushed the narrative along. Ophelia was tough and highly skilled, complex but also believable. Readers would probably be invested in her beyond the dangers she encountered. Austin felt like a true ally rather than just going along for the ride. Their dynamic was a good balance between tension and humanity. I liked that Gerhard’s character wasn’t a one-note villain, but he had complicated motives. I especially appreciated the Afghanistan backstory that deepened the mystery. This story had plenty of action, and I could picture it on the big screen. It reminded me of Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Identity meets Terry Hayes’ I Am Pilgrim. Readers who loved those stories layered with intelligence and espionage would enjoy The Hunted.
