The Institute (The Institute Series Book 1) by Kayla Howarth is a paranormal young adult story that revolves around Defectives, people with a DNA mutation that gives them special superpowers. Allira's brother is a defective and she's willing to do anything to keep him safe from the Institute, whose job it is to hunt all defectives. Allira believes the Institute is more like a prison than the safe place it pretends to be. Protecting her brother Shilah from the Institute is her number one goal. When Allira draws the eye of the Institute as well, it is time for her family to make another decision; do they run away and hide or do they stand and fight? Is it just about their family, or could the whole of the human race be at stake? What can Allira do? She's only seventeen, and she doesn't have superpowers like her brother. At least...not that she knows of...yet.
This is a fun, dystopian paranormal story with people that have incredible superpowers. Readers of dystopian and paranormal stories will love the 'us versus them' mentality and be rooting for Allira as she manages to take on the bigger authority that looms over her. Readers will also appreciate Allira's love for her brother and the fact that she is so willing to do whatever it takes, including risking danger herself, in order to protect her family. This love of family was one of the best qualities of the book and I think other readers will appreciate it as well. Nice job!
