The Joshua Effect by P.S. Meronek is a thriller that opens with billionaire mogul, Jonathan, preparing for the rooftop party celebrating the opening of his newest high-rise building in New York City. Through his reminiscences, we meet the estranged love of his life, Charlene, or Charlie as she is better known. Interrupted in his daydream, Jonathan jumps into his helicopter for a surprise entrance to the party on his building. As the helicopter comes within feet of landing, the unthinkable happens as the building below crashes into rubble. Jonathan is close enough to the destruction to see the faces of his friends as they disappear in the collapse. As the rest of the book unfolds, Jonathan, Charlie, and his trusted companions work to find who destroyed the building and why it was targeted. Jonathan is dedicated to finding the person or people who killed his friends.
In The Joshua Effect, P.S. Meronek creates a compelling thriller that combines action, a great mystery, and a man discovering his true value – and the true meaning of friendship and love. Throughout the book, Meronek develops the cast of characters in such a way that all of them can be suspects. These suspects range from scientists to Syrian rebels to officials in the United States government – including Charlie’s father. As the plot widens, Jonathan discovers that things are not necessarily what they seem to be. The technologies described in the book are believable and essential to the development of the plot. This book was a fun read that had me turning pages – and staying awake far too late – until the very end.
