The Jump Shot by Tony Gales is an ideal book for boys who play sports. Bennie the turtle plays basketball for Liberty Elementary School. He is the star player on the team and is terrific at jump shot. Bennie is unable to find time to do his assignments due to basketball and Mrs. Simmons, his teacher, is getting annoyed. She also complains to his mother. Carina tells Benny that he has to complete his assignments to play in the biggest rival game of the school year. Bennie knows the school team cannot do without him and his over-confidence makes him not finish the school assignments. The day of the match comes - will Benny be allowed to play in spite of his incomplete assignments?

The story teaches young readers the importance of being responsible in life, especially when it comes to completing school assignments. Bennie, though a great basketball player, does not concentrate much on his studies ... which finally teaches him some important lessons about life. The illustrations are charming and they help readers connect with the story and the characters. The book is good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Parents and grandparents can use it as a suitable book for bedtime storytelling. I like the book for its message and because it teaches kids the importance of school and school work, along with pursuing sports. It helps those who are into sports and tells them to pursue their studies with the same passion as they do their sports.

This is a dynamic story, and on point for today's young readers. Hopefully, we will see more stories of this sort from author Tony Gales.
