The Keepers by Anoosha Lalani is a fantastical tale set in the mythological land of Adam and Eve's birth. Isra is hungry and homeless and, after the death of her parents, in charge of her sister. She knows that there is something unique about herself, the fact that she can talk to and see foreign, mythical creatures for one, but she has no idea if those visions are real or a kind of mental issue. She also doesn't understand how it ties in with the amulet she was left, the last and only reminder of her parents. What Isra doesn't understand is that her family has a legacy as the Keeper of the Amulet, a magical necklace that helps the keepers protect the borders of Zarcane, Adam and Eve's birthplace. Demons threaten the beautiful sanctuary and it is Isra's job to track down the second keeper and, with his help, close Zarcane's borders to demons and keep it safe once and for all.

I really liked the sense of culture within this story and I think other readers will appreciate the names, words and language that pepper this story in such a delightful way. I enjoyed the mythological creatures and the magical element that those invisible and unique creatures added to the story. Fans of fantasy will love these magical elements as well as the beautiful descriptions of the fantastical new worlds we are transported to with Isra and her sister.
