The Krakow Klub by Philip C. Elrod is a cross between a spy-action thriller and a science fiction novel. The book’s main character is John Scott, who is half-human and half-Mylean, the only survivor of a doomed planet. A supercomputer aboard a space station harvests John’s DNA to clone more Myleans and in return protects John and allows him to amass great wealth. Now John has his own island in the Florida Keys, complete with a golf course, his own robot-servant, his own personal spacecraft, and a beautiful woman he’s falling in love with. However, he soon receives word of a super-secret conspiracy of a group of powerful, wealthy people who have highly placed agents in the government and the military. They plan to create chaos and then establish a dictatorship in the U.S. Do John, his new girlfriend Julia, and his closest human friend Jim Slater -- even with John’s access to Mylean technology -- have what it takes to go up against The Krakow Klub?
Elrod’s fusion of the two genres in The Krakow Klub works — the characters are believable, and the suspense makes you want to keep reading. The book contains humor, too, as we read the thoughts of John’s robot, who wonders about the peculiarities of “these humans,” and his pet dog. The book also takes you behind the scenes into the world of high-ranking government officials in Washington, D.C. – Jim Slater, for example, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval College and works for the National Security Advisor’s office. As for the Krakow Klub members, they’re so thoroughly evil that you want to hiss at them. At times author Elrod, through his characters, expresses his conservative political philosophy, but even this reviewer, a die-hard left-liberal, didn’t let that get in the way of enjoying a good book. I would recommend The Krakow Klub to anyone who enjoys thrillers with a sci-fi twist.
