In The Lady in the Veil by Allie Cresswell, upon her mother's marriage, Georgina Willow is sent from her isolated existence in the rugged moors of Yorkshire into mid-1830’s London society. Unlike most young women who might be thrilled to spend a season amongst the 'ton', this prospect is near-torturous for Georgina. Due to a deeply rooted anxiety fostered by a cloistered upbringing and a traumatic incident in her youth, she fears exposure so greatly that she covers her face with a veil almost constantly. While staying at the home of her cousin George, she is determined to avoid the public eye and the shallow trappings of high society life, though this proves to be much more challenging than she thought. Ultimately, Georgina’s time in London triggers many changes in her life, some of which are beyond what she had ever imagined. But she must also contend with Lady Jane, George’s socially driven and vindictive wife, who is determined to expose the long-kept secret behind Georgina’s identity.

Set in Regency England, The Lady in the Veil by Allie Cresswell introduces a rich cast of characters, all with compelling stories. Although it is the second novel in The Talbot Saga, the story stands on its own and provides a delicious sense of mystery as you delve into Georgina’s unique plight and uncover the truth of who she truly is. And while her story is at the heart of the novel, the diversity of side characters really shines and takes the novel to another level. I found this to be an engaging social commentary that explores all corners and classes of society and displays the varied shades of humanity: their foibles and vices, their hopes and victories. Strong themes, such as racism and prejudice, personal growth and self-acceptance, and what it means to be seen and to truly see others, are touched on, making it a satisfying and enjoyable read.
