The Land Where Money Was Nothing is an educational and wonderful children's fable by Barbara Roman. The story introduces us to a man called Elias, who suddenly inherits quite a large sum of money from his father. Thrilled that he can now call himself rich and enjoy the benefits of such a status, Elias embarks on a journey to a land far away from his home, somewhere where he expects to be treated as a person who has money, meaning being respected and noticed everywhere he goes. However, in this place, as Elias soon realizes, there are far more important things than status and money. Will Elias understand what is going on and decide to stay, or will he leave and never come back to this unusual, faraway land?

Barbara Roman’s delightful and educational story teaches us to think and look beyond money and material things in a very approachable way. Elias, as the main character, is portrayed perfectly because he embodies the visible change in that mindset, which is a challenge in itself, and the confusion he experiences during that change is relatable, real, and positively human. Living in a society that teaches us to have more and own more, this story is a breath of fresh air as it talks about values, respect, altruism, and care for one another; things that matter more than money. A light, fun, and educational read, The Land Where Money Was Nothing will win the hearts of readers everywhere and reveal a different side of life and a way to turn one's attention to people and moments that matter the most.
