In J.E. Rogers’ The Last Ayer, the reader is transported to Sunderland, a once-thriving land now suffering under the oppressive rule of the Perentie, Jago. The book follows Keera, a young numbat living in a hidden oasis, who discovers she is the last of the ancient Ayer lineage and the rightful Guardian of the Forest. Circumstances thrust Keera into a conflict with Jago, whose relentless pursuit of progress has devastated the environment and enslaved its inhabitants. Aiding Keera are her loyal friend Echo, a lyrebird, unexpected allies like Simon, a leaf-tailed gecko pirate, and the downtrodden citizens of Dungarah. The narrative builds toward a climactic battle for the soul of Sunderland, where Keera must be accepted into the ancient Ayer lineage, for she is the last Ayer. Can she wield the mantle of power handed down by many Ayers for thousands of years as the heritage of long-ago Guardians?

The characters in The Last Ayer are a diverse and engaging cast of Australian animals, each with distinct personalities and roles. Keera, the numbat, evolves from a sheltered, hesitant creature to a powerful and determined leader, representing the hope of Sunderland. Echo, the lyrebird, becomes Keera's steadfast companion and moral compass, and his ability to mimic sounds proves unexpectedly helpful. Jago, the Perentie, is a compelling antagonist, driven by a misguided vision of progress that blinds him to the destruction he causes. Including characters like Simon, the unexpectedly honorable pirate, and the relatable citizens of Dungarah augments the entertainment level. The setting of Sunderland, with its distinct regions like the lush oasis, the parched outlands, and the burgeoning but environmentally ruinous city of Dungarah, is well portrayed. J.E. Rogers’ novel is well-written and filled with fascinating illustrations. It’s a page-turner with strong environmental themes and unforgettable characters.
