The Legend of the Burning Lake by Kayla Swanson tells the story of a community living in fear of magic and fire. Any talk of magic is frowned upon, and the community focuses on the basic means of survival under the leadership of a rather disagreeable character. Johnny and his sister Ellie are members of a respected family, but once Johnny discovers a burning lake, and some mysterious powers within himself, things take a different turn. A dragon and his guardians become involved, and the lives of Johnny and his friends and family suddenly don't seem that safe any longer. What will win out? Bravery and magic, or the fear of magic and the apparent safety behind a power-hungry leader?
The Legend of the Burning Lake by Kayla Swanson is not just a book for children. I am quite sure teenagers, young adults, and even older readers like me will all find something enjoyable in this story (as long as you don't expect high fantasy). I would highly recommend this book to parents who would like to encourage their kids to read more, because once you get them hooked with good stories, it'll be hard to make them stop reading! Kayla Swanson writes in a simple, clear style that is suitable for children. As an adult, I would have liked to see the characters being more individual, i.e. having more defining characteristics, but I guess kids have enough fantasy to make up their own background for the characters in the book. It is an enjoyable read with some exciting bits.
