Emma and her family are moving to a new town far away. It’s a big move, and Emma’s not too happy about it. In Mark K. McClain’s The Library Between Worlds, Emma learns that her father is getting a big promotion, and her parents really believe the move will do her good. School is over for the summer, and the family packs up and moves to Mistwick (what a great name for a town!). Emma is captivated right from the beginning, and the first place she visits is the Mistwick Library. Emma loves books much more than she loves other people. When she’s offered a job at the library, she’s torn between excitement and wondering if it’s really a good idea for her to be working at the library. That’s where the magic begins. It’s not just the magic one finds in books, but real magic in real worlds in real books. And there’s darkness invading these worlds, something that threatens the very existence of reality itself.

Mark K. McClain’s The Library Between Worlds is a compelling fantasy that captivates readers from the very beginning. The main character, Emma, is so realistic that many readers will feel a special bond with her. I love the author’s selection of character names. The names in themselves are magical, like Friden, the eccentric librarian who hires Emma, and Faylen, the elf. Even the evil antagonist has a suitable name: Eraser. The place names are magical too, like Mistwick, where Emma and her family settle. Dialogue is used effectively, helping to move the story forward. Descriptive narrative is well developed, as are the characters. This is a fantastical, exciting plot where, as Friden says, “Curiosity is the only requirement.” Readers will feel their own spark of curiosity spike as the adventure heightens and moves forward.
