The Little Hedgehog’s Second Christmas by Ian Humpheryes is a delightful holiday tale in the Bluebell Woods series. In this story, Little Hedgehog is very excited to finally celebrate Christmas Day. He sets out to find the perfect Christmas gifts for his friends. However, each time he finds a unique gift for them, he later realizes they do not need it. Little Hedgehog begins to feel hopeless and that he’s failed his friends. Little does he know, he’s in for a magical surprise from just the person he needs! Perhaps he got it right all along.
The Little Hedgehog’s Second Christmas is such a heartwarming and whimsical tale with beautiful illustrations to match. Ian does a great job with character development and showing their emotions (especially Little Hedgehog), which is further enhanced by the expressive illustrations. Little Hedgehog is a relatable character in that he is unsure of himself at times and wants to show his friends how much he cares about them. This story reminds me of the Winnie-the-Pooh children’s book series. Like Pooh, Little Hedgehog loves his friends very much but has to deal with obstacles getting in the way (and don’t we all?). Both books are about celebrating the simple pleasures in life and what really matters. Little Hedgehog learns this with some help from a special jolly friend, just in time for Christmas. Children will learn a valuable lesson in that it isn’t about what type of gifts you give others, but rather where they came from, which is priceless. Children will love this magical holiday tale. I recommend this book to all children for a special holiday bedtime story treat. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
