The Little Ladybug is a rhyming, illustrated storybook by Amelia May. It tells the tale of a lonely ladybug who is looking for a friend. The ladybug meets a lot of different bugs on his journey, but most of them are too busy or self-important to give him any time to be friends with them. He is teased because he is alone, but, just when he’s given up hope, he finds a lost little ant to whom he can offer help. Will these two become the best of friends?
I found Amelia May’s rhymes to be beautiful and well-constructed, without sacrificing the good grammar that I find is so important in books for young children. The illustrations were excellent and would be adored by young children; they accompanied each verse of the story perfectly and helped bring the pivotal moments of the plot to life. I found the layout of the book to be very well thought out and pleasing to both the adult and child reader’s eye; I could easily imagine reading this book to the young children that I know.
I think the moral message of being patient until you find the friends that are right for you is very important for young children and it is delivered in The Little Ladybug with tact and delicacy. The importance of kindness and doing a good deed for a stranger is also an excellent message within the text. Overall, a delightful and meaningful book for young readers.
