Ronald Craig deliberately draws on his experiences of life and his work to write children’s fiction with a specific purpose: subtle guidance through the dangers, temptations, and challenges they must face as they grow up. “Never trust a stranger.” “Lies hurt the liar.” “Be brave” and so much more. The Little Witch and The Lost Boy stars young witch Nina Whosley and her pet owl, Toots. Is the secret Order of the Feathers an influence for good or evil? Can Nina reunite Dillwyn, the boy she finds lost and frightened, with his parents who were kidnapped by the Red Witch? Will Nina’s visit to The Inventor lead her to her grandfather who’s been mysteriously missing since she was a little girl?

The Little Witch and The Lost Boy by Ronald Craig is a book that will enchant preteens. When Nina needs to travel, she steps through a magical mirror. “With a swish, a swoosh and spark from her wand.” There isn’t one handy to return home? Nina tells the weather to turn cold and uses a frozen puddle instead. And then there is the box of lies that… but if I give away too many secrets I shall be turned into a toad, if Nina goes along with Toots’s choice! Obviously, being a magical owl he can talk. I loved this captivating, often funny book. I recommend The Little Witch and The Lost Boy to parents as the perfect gift, and it could usefully find its niche in school libraries.
