Cael's unintended role in the events leading to his mother's death hardens his father's heart toward the young mouse and creates a growing emotional rift in the family. Unable to win back his father's affections and determined to make a name for himself as a warrior, Cael leaves home in search of an adventure that will transform him into the vision he sees of himself. His hasty actions throw him into the middle of a deadly battle between the Elexor army and the Badger Clans, where there can be only one victor. The ambitious mouse is about to learn a lesson about the importance of family and the value of friends in Colm Hearne's The Lost Brother: A Legend of Tara.
Colm Hearne uses direct, simple statements to emphasize the effects of Cael's mother's death on the relationship between father and son. The dialogue is extremely simplified, intended to make the narrative appealing to young readers. Use of unconventional words, such as mousess, to describe familiar animals will catch the eyes of youngsters. The focus of battle-oriented scenarios from Cael's perspective will immerse readers in the action. The author complements these elements with subtle messages on the importance of teamwork and forgiveness, highlighted by Cael's emotional clash with his brother on the battlefield. Aided by the vivid map at the beginning, this is a gripping story that perfectly balances action and drama while teaching young readers important life lessons. I enjoyed reading The Lost Brother.
