The Magical Soul is a picture book for young readers by author Marisela Marquez. Death is a difficult concept to understand for people of all ages, but most particularly for children. A young girl, Marie, wants to know about her father, who died when she was very young. She doesn’t understand why she can no longer see him or talk to him. Her mother takes on the task with care and explains how the body dies, but the soul lives on forever and is watching over loved ones from heaven above. You see, love never dies: it’s an everlasting concept that maintains a connection with those who have passed on before us.
Marisela Marquez’s picture book story, The Magical Soul, is a tender, heartwarming story that addresses the difficult subject of death and the loss of a loved one. Told in simple language with a question-answer approach (which will appeal to any young reader who is always full of questions), this story will open doors to discussions within the family, and aid in a deeper understanding of life beyond death. The author is compassionate, patient, and caring in her explanations and the bright, colorful illustrations make the topic cheerful, even if it is a somber subject. The mother explains the concept of death and how the soul lives on, and then expertly suggests Marie talks to her father. Even if she can’t see or hear him, his soul is still watching over her, and she can tell him her thoughts. This is an excellent resource to help a young person understand and grieve after the loss of a loved one. It also helps them accept that there are things that one cannot see, like the magical soul of a living creature.
