The Martini Club Mystery (the first of a 4 novel series) by Alan Eysen is a mystery sleuth novel that would appeal most to an audience of mature young adults and adults who enjoy murder mysteries and do not mind explicit language, sexual situations, and graphic violence. The Martini Club is made up of a diverse set of members, which include, but are not limited to, a former CIA agent, a Washington ad man, an ex-journalist, a retired brothel owner, an ex-airline pilot, and a non-practicing rabbi. This diverse set of members comes together about once a month to drink, debate, and tell stories. Yet, one meeting changes everything when the club receives an offer that will put them back into the game and allow them to earn a tidy profit. What seems like a spot of fun quickly turns deadly when a local ends up dead and all the signs point to the death not being from natural causes.
The Martini Club Mystery by Alan Eysen has an intriguing cover that features the image of a martini, but hints at elements of mystery with a dark, shadowy background. It is often difficult to find adult mystery novels that involve teamwork as most of the good ones involve a team of teens, yet this book truly delivered a mystery novel that brings a team of adults together, working to uncover a plot. The non-practicing Rabbi Nathan Ginsberg became my favorite character because of how he assumed the role of leader in the group, and due to his easy-going attitude. Overall, I enjoyed the mystery elements of the novel, but what really made it stand out was the character interaction between the members of The Martini Club.
