In The Mermaid Killer by Joseph Miguel, Holly is raised in rural Kentucky. Her father, who is a cop, is very abusive toward her, both physically and emotionally. Things are made worse by the fact that her mother knew of the abuse but did nothing about it. One day in an encounter with her father, Holly manages to get her father's gun and shoot him. She then goes to her mother and beats her to death. As the investigation proceeds to establish what had happened, Holly is saved by a detailed diary that her father kept, which describes everything he had done to her. Holly is sent to a psychiatric facility where she spends several years. At the facility, there is also abuse and unorthodox methods of treatment, but eventually, she escapes and goes on a killing spree. How will things turn out?

Once you start reading The Mermaid Killer by Joseph Miguel, there is no putting it down. The writing is crisp, engaging, and filled with well-crafted dialogue that captures the imagination of the reader. I loved the vivid descriptions, which helped create a mental picture of what was happening. The plot also flows seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion. This thought-provoking work also gets one thinking about issues such as parenting and the effect of the environment on behavior and mental health. The characters were well-developed, and the reader will also appreciate the excellent narrative, which added to the overall beauty of this amazing work. This was a good read, and I look forward to more by this talented author.
