The Monarch Alliance by Jessica James is a mystery filled with distinctive characters, both past and present, who are guests at the legendary Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York. The setting has surprises around every corner. Old love letters found by Danika, written both to and from her great-grandmother, Abigail, create a trail for dual timelines. Danika has taken a break from her journalism career to find respite at the Mountain House. But before long, cryptic conversations between conference goers and clues found hidden in the letters soon lead Danika into a seemingly unending maze, not unlike the miles of house corridors and carriage roads on the grounds. The Quaker-built structure, once known for its peace conferences, still has centuries-old secrets that may offer solutions today.
Overlooking the Hudson River, high on a mountaintop sits Mohonk Mountain House. I’ve seen it from the water. The house is both imposing and familiar. Regal, but rustic. What I found most impressive in Jessica James’s The Monarch Alliance is that she uses this historic structure as a significant character. Although it is still an active “inn,” James has breathed new life into the old building through this suspenseful, eloquently written tale. Hushed conversations between suspicious modern-day entities share the hallowed halls with poetic lovers who once lounged upon velvet brocade settees. It’s the contrasts that I found intriguing. This clever story is a cross between historical fiction and contemporary mystery. Although old, romantic letters are the catalyst, this smartly written tale is really about something much bigger. If I am curious enough to research the history of a place after I close a book, then I believe that the author has written an outstanding story. I am presently planning my first stay at Mohonk Mountain House!
