The Monkey Who Wished To Be A Deer by Vedika Agrawal and Kunal Das tells the story of a young monkey called Kobu, who wants to be a deer. He watches the deer from his tree and wishes that he could run free like them. When an elephant tries to tell him that he is exactly who he should be, Kobu is mean to him. He wishes to be a deer so much that he prays to the jungle god to change him into one. Surprised by the wish, the jungle god grants it and Kobu is transformed into a deer. Happy, he runs around with the other deer. It isn't long though before he realizes that he cannot do all the things he used to do as a monkey. He cannot eat the same foods or cuddle up with his mom at the end of the day. When they are chased by a tiger, Kobu is more than willing to go back to being a monkey. Will he get his wish?
Vedika Agrawal and Kunal Das have created a charming book with The Monkey Who Wished To Be A Deer. The story shows children that you shouldn't wish to be like someone else and that you should be happy being yourself. Kobu learns this life lesson the hard way. The story is well written and Kobu is a great character. The illustrations are eye-catching and I think young children will love this book. It would appeal to kids in the 4-8 age range. I would recommend it.
