Imagine a mouse running loose in the opera house! Can you imagine the mischief? And yet, in Tuula Pere’s The Mouse of the Opera, Maurice, a curious little wood mouse, has an exciting time exploring the opera building after hours and again during the performance itself. It’s all a grand adventure as he enjoys snacks in the restaurant, finds places to rest (like inside a French horn), listens to the grand performance from the safety of a little boy’s pocket, and so much more. Enticed by the magic of the music, what more could a little mouse ask for? All this happens while the performers and their audience panic about a mouse on the loose.
Tuula Pere’s picture book, The Mouse of the Opera, is an endearing story about a little mouse and the passion and allure of music. The story is told in simple language, introducing the main character, Maurice, as a simple little mouse with a great yearning, attracted by the lights and the sounds of the opera. The plot follows Maurice’s adventures as he does what he’s been warned not to do: explore the opera house. Young readers will be cheering on this brave little mouse as they learn to enjoy, as Maurice did, the uplifting power of music. The illustrations by Outi Rautkallio are superb and help move the story forward. This is a great story about passion, music, opera, and the importance of caring for and respecting all creatures, even a little mouse.
