The Mystery of the Haunted House is the first book in Willow Night's Sycamore Street Mysteries series. Noah Walker, a sixth-grader, and his younger brother, Josh, are obsessed with the abandoned haunted house down Sycamore Street. Upon discovering that the local real estate agent was struggling to sell the house, Noah and Josh decide to spy on it and run into the new kid in town, Olivia. After seeing flashing lights at the house, the three kids team up to get to the bottom of things. However, when Josh goes missing, Noah has no choice but to sneak into the house himself. Noah and Olivia find Josh. But they also inadvertently stumble upon a deeper conspiracy that is bound to create ripples within the neighborhood. Can they report their findings to the adults?
Young readers who love sleuthing mystery adventures will have an absolute blast with The Mystery of the Haunted House. This first installment is an absolute page-turner, laced with mystery, intrigue, and adventure. There is not a single dull moment in the entire book. Preteen readers will love these characters as they are not only likable but also relatable. Noah, Josh, and Olivia demonstrate an innate sense of adventure and an unwavering determination to solve any mystery they come across. I loved the relationship dynamic between Noah and Josh. They genuinely seemed like an older-younger brother duo. Olivia is a nice addition to their little group as she shares their passion for sleuthing and solving mysteries. Author Willow Night's dialogue is also top-notch, making the character interactions all the more entertaining. Young detective readers will love this book.
