The Mystery of the Spot by Lynn Helton is a children's story following a mystery that Charlotte wants to solve. Charlotte wears eyeglasses and sometimes touches the lenses, which leaves a spot where she touches them. She doesn't mean to touch the lens, but when she does, she makes sure that she cleans the spot. However, on one particular day, Charlotte sees a spot on the lens of her glasses, and she knows that she hasn't touched them. Where could the spot come from? Not just on that day but other times too when she was sure she hadn't touched the lens of her glasses. Charlotte is so mystified by this that she starts investigating the source of the spot.
Lynn Helton taps into children's curiosity in this mystifying yet captivating story, taking the reader through Charlotte's investigation with suspense that holds their attention. The pacing is steady, following a logical sequence of events, which helps children maintain their current train of thought as the story progresses. Charlotte's curiosity about the source of the spot and her subsequent investigation also act as a driver, pushing the action forward with a realization that captivates the minds of young readers. What I liked about this story is Charlotte's determination to solve the mystery even when she faced a little challenge catching the culprit in the act. I highly recommend The Mystery of the Spot to young readers and adults who appreciate the innocence of childhood curiosity.
