Tristan and some other kids are taken to a magical school in The Natural Order by R.J. Vickers. The kids have one thing in common: they have been in juvenile prison and have no home to go back to (apart from one character who has no criminal history). The magical school is offering them a second chance, but the kids are not quite sure what their role is supposed to be in the beginning. Tristan and his new friends learn to extract and use the magic. Only a couple of them seem to have a natural talent for it though - and Tristan always manages to get into trouble. He and Amber, a magically talented, introverted girl, also receive special attention from the slightly creepy headmaster. What does he want from them? And why is there suddenly someone who tries to manipulate the school, trying to destroy it? And what is hidden in the tunnels under the school?

When the teachers made their big reveal in The Natural Order by R.J. Vickers, I couldn't believe their real reasons for their secrecy. I loved it, and even thought that it would be amazing if people like that really existed and could solve some of the problems of the world. Other readers may not share my enthusiasm about this, but I found it really amazing! Of course, the main characters are less than enthused, which I guess is understandable, too, after all they are just kids who haven't seen much of the ways of the world yet. I assume that in future books they will learn a bit more about what truly is at stake and grow into their roles. At least I hope so!

This is not the first book by R.J. Vickers I have read. I usually do not pay attention to the names of authors much. These days, many are just one hit wonders. They write one book, and then - poof - nothing. So when I saw this name, I found it vaguely familiar and realized I've read her before and that I loved her other book, too! This author seems to deliver consistent quality and that is great to see nowadays where there seem to be fewer proper writers. I hope she keeps on going because her books offer true value. The plot of this book draws you in, the characters are believable, and it is a truly enjoyable reading experience.
