The Necessary Goodbye by Peter D. Banko is a well-written book that offers readers essential leadership tools for finding, developing, and nurturing talent; selecting the right people for their team, and firing team members who do not contribute meaningfully to organizational goals and fit the culture. Peter begins by examining the four key behaviors of successful CEOs, as identified through research. Drawing insights from Carl Jung's studies, Peter discusses Jung’s four major archetypes, which include the persona, the shadow, the anima, and the self, all of which combine and give rise to twelve archetypal figures. This book also explores a framework for understanding the people who work for you. It covers those factors that could get in the way of effective managers, such as the desire to please others and more.
This book was impactful, as it offered clarity in setting leadership boundaries and enforcing standards. The archetypes discussed also helped me understand my natural leadership tendencies and how I can prevent my personal feelings from interfering with business realities. I loved that this book explored almost every aspect of leadership, and I commend the author for the depth of research invested in it. I liked that the author also shared personal experiences, stories, and quotes from other successful business leaders, which made this book more engaging. The writing is organized, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. It featured themes on leadership, psychology, human resource management, and more. I recommend The Necessary Goodbye by Peter D. Banko to all aspiring leaders, managers, CEOs, and entrepreneurs.
