R.E. Davies’s The Necromancer’s Gift follows a young human woman who wakes in a dark forest after Ulve, a drow necromancer, attempts a spell he should not be casting. She has no name or memories, while Ulve discovers he has raised a living woman instead of an obedient corpse. Calling her Arasi, he takes her to Felhuhn, the drow city where he has spent his own life as an outsider. When Arasi dies again, Ulve learns that a mistake in his incantation called back her actual soul, and each resurrection gives her less time. A rare soulstone may keep her alive long enough to discover who killed her, but the search leads them toward Ulve’s powerful family and fragments of a past buried beneath fire.

R.E. Davies’s The Necromancer’s Gift is gorgeous fantasy fiction, and Davies gives its long journey a wonderful sense of discovery. I loved Vorn Manor because Ulve’s return to the household that named him “mistake” opens an entirely different side of him, with one family meal bringing years of hurt into the room. Fawlyn is brilliant. The dead high-elf warrior living inside a raven has superb dry humor, and his wish to reach the wife and son waiting beyond death gives him an entire life of his own. The romance is beautifully paced because affection grows from the ordinary days Ulve and Arasi share. Davies also makes the magic pitch perfect, and there's a really lovely moment when Ulve restores an uchen to its ancient form. Finally...that cover is stunning! Well written and utterly immersive, readers who enjoy romantic fantasy with necromancy will adore this.
