Jack Miller, a seasoned FBI agent, and Ross Fruen, who he quickly nicknames Junior, are assigned to the case of a series of bank robberies. Things change considerably when during the latest robbery a pregnant woman is killed. The thief has never killed before, so why now? And, why this particular woman? During all the crimes, the gunman wore a mask but made no other attempt to hide his identity as though to taunt the FBI. Due to the mask’s features, similar to that of a previous elected official, the robber is quickly assigned the nickname of the Governor. As the two agents follow the clues, their lives become threatened. This only makes them become more determined to find their guy and put an end to his crime spree. As the case continues to unfold, it becomes reasonably certain the real target is the Federal Reserve. Since the Federal Reserve has never been robbed, the agents come to believe that this is the Governor’s ultimate prize.
Dorow has written a well-paced thriller with different points of view to keep the reader’s interest all the way to its exciting conclusion. His plot and dialog are good and I quickly found myself drawn into the story. The main characters are strong, both the good guys and the bad. The villain is cold, calculating and hard. The agents have problems of their own, from the inexperience of the rookie to the trouble at home for the senior agent. Unfortunately, the ending seemed to be a tad abrupt, though possibly leaving room for a sequel. Overall, a very good story.
