The Ocean at Night by Lorna Hollifield is a riveting mystery and a coming-of-age story told with great care and realism. This book reimagines an old legend that tells the tale of children being taken in the ocean mists of the night by an unknown being, never to be seen again. Set in modern-day South Carolina, the main character, Teal, a young woman, goes through every rise and fall of emotion as the legend of the missing children strikes close to home. She is determined to stay out of the fray until avoiding the mystery becomes impossible. Alone, hurting, and confused, she overcomes tremendous odds and emerges as the unlikeliest of heroes in this heartwarming tale. The story provides a satisfying ending and brings to light the truth behind the mystery, forever changing lives in the process.

The main character, Teal, will steal your heart by the end of this story with her honesty, big dreams, and selfless love for her family. Author Lorna Hollifield writes each character with such vibrancy and well-placed moments of wit that you will feel the characters are real people and will find yourself both smiling and cheering for them in every chapter. The behind-the-scenes theme of this story is revealed at the end and provides the anchor for the book. You will be inspired, no doubt, to take positive action upon realizing the truth behind the legends of old and the current mystery within The Ocean at Night. The story is inspiring and provides hope that circumstances can often be overcome with enough persistence and determination even in the direst of times.
