The Pink Sun by Azaliya Schulz is a heartfelt children's story that gently explores the impact of a parent's illness on a family. Through the eyes of a young boy named Alex, the story introduces the challenges and changes that come with his mother's cancer diagnosis. Using simple language and relatable metaphors, such as comparing cancer cells to weeds in a garden, the book explains a difficult topic in a way children can understand. At its core, The Pink Sun is about love, hope, and the strength that families find in each other during uncertain times. The vibrant illustrations by Natalia Butenkon also add to the book’s appeal. The story emphasizes creativity as a source of comfort, showing how Alex uses art to express his emotions and bring positivity to his mother during her treatment.

The Pink Sun does an excellent job of tackling a tough subject with warmth and sensitivity. Azaliya Schulz crafted believable characters; Alex’s emotions are honest and real. His parents are portrayed as caring and supportive, navigating the challenge of explaining a serious illness to their child with patience and love. I also appreciated how the book highlights the power of art as a way to process emotions and create hope. Alex's drawings are not just a creative outlet but a symbol of resilience and connection between him and his mother. The pacing suits the story well, giving readers space to address their emotions without feeling rushed. I liked how the author incorporated charts to help families plan and adapt to the changes that come with a parent's illness. The book also encourages children to open up about their feelings as they engage with the story. The themes of family support, open communication, and emotional validation are handled with care, making this book not only a valuable resource for children facing similar experiences but also a touching story about the strength of family bonds.
