As Faith Edwards tends to her critically ill father, she happens upon a conversation between her father and an unknown individual who is trying to get five hundred thousand dollars from him. She finds out that her father is the victim of a long-running blackmail scheme, but no matter how hard she tries, he will not give her any information to enable her to stop the perpetrator. Later, when strolling along the beach, Olivia finds a few hundred dollar bills. She is unaware that these banknotes are part of a bank robbery and that the police, under the command of a handsome detective, are pursuing the offenders. Her attempt to help their investigation, driven by her desire to clear her name, inadvertently brings her into the center of a bold plot with sinister connections to her family. Passionate moments lead to the revelation of uncomfortable secrets in Olivia Godat’s The Portrait.
The Portrait by Olivia Godat pays homage to the classic mystery genre. Godat uses well-placed clues and gradual pacing to draw readers into a captivating story with a deceptively simple plot. The character development is impressive as intriguingly worded flashbacks add extra suspense to an adventure where a revelation lies at the end of each chapter. The characters' dialogue flows naturally and is captivating. At the same time, their motivations become apparent as she unravels the connections between a bank robbery and a confidence scheme hundreds of miles apart. A subtly electric romance permeates the narrative as Faith's liaisons with Sandy unfold within a masterfully constructed mystery. Godat’s ability to weave seemingly unconnected subplots into one fluid adventure shows how good this author is, engaging readers from start to finish. Fans of mystery and suspense will enjoy this riveting novel.
