The Present is a Gift by Elchanan Ogorek is educational and informative and teaches children mindfulness in an engaging way. The teacher takes the children out of the classroom to see what they can learn from animals. The Sloth always stays in the moment and it moves very slowly. Bugs make their homes in the fur of the Sloth. Wolves howl to communicate with other wolves. Squirrels grow and learn from every movement. Some Turtles can hide their heads inside their shells and Seals fully accept their lives. Bears are aware of and take in the beauty of their surroundings while Frogs can breathe in through their mouth area, skin, and lungs. Cats are good at letting it go. Let's read on and learn about animals, their yoga poses, and affirmations to bring mindfulness into our lives in an uplifting way.
The concept is wonderful and thought-provoking and the author's approach to the topic is interesting and novel. The concept of living in the moment has been handled in such an entertaining way without making it sound boring and preachy to youngsters. Children love animals and there can be no better way to introduce them to this concept than with the help of animals. The illustrations give a good pace and movement to the book and will also inspire adults to practice mindfulness. It is definitely a must-have book in a personal collection at home and in school libraries to help children understand the importance of being mindful and living in the present moment.
