The Pug Who Didn't Belong is a children’s picture book written by Janina Kelly with illustrations by Tommy Hardman. It tells the story of Paula, a pampered pug who lived in a beautiful castle. Her human provided her with everything she desired, including belly rubs, healthy meals, a comfortable sleeping spot, and a wealth of toys. Unfortunately, her human fell ill, and knew she had limited time left to care for Paula. As a result, she decides to send Paula to the countryside, where an old man would take care of her. However, Paula quickly discovers that the old man is grumpy and constantly busy. Feeling lonely and out of place, Paula's spirits begin to lift when she ventures outside and finds unlikely friends who welcome her and bring joy to her life and her new human.
The Pug Who Didn't Belong is a heartwarming tale about adapting to change and making new friends. The story also touches on themes of grief, loneliness, and embracing new beginnings—important topics that can be challenging for many children to understand. This book addresses these issues in a gentle and engaging way that children can relate to. Janina Kelly uses simple rhyming words and phrases in her writing, which adds a musical quality to the narrative. Starting afresh is never easy, but it can lead to unexpected adventures, new connections, and finding a place to call home again. The colorful illustrations perfectly complement the story and bring the characters to life. The whimsical and humorous elements in the art add a lighthearted touch, balancing the heavier subjects. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend sharing it with your children to teach them about friendship, resilience, and embracing change.
