Cedrela is a wealthy city with a deep history. Most know it as the city of high elves, but people from many races call Cedrela home. This includes Boris Dragonheart, a dragonborn who is proud to serve in the Royal Guard, protecting the people and following in the footsteps of his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather. Alas, his plain, predictable life gets a lot more complicated when a burglary case turns into a massive conspiracy. Boris starts questioning everything he thought he knew as he partners with the mischievous elf CB to investigate the city’s dark side. S. Kaufman’s The Reality Shaper follows the duo as they challenge powerful enemies and stumble upon ancient magic secrets.
I had a lot of fun with this book. It’s a lighthearted adventure with mysteries, action, and tons of banter, but there’s also plenty of heart here. Boris and CB’s relationship is at the center, and their interactions range from funny and adorable to deep and real. Boris’s character is especially gripping, as he slowly grows from a naive, rigid guard to a more independent and flexible man while still keeping his core values and some of his flaws. S. Kaufman is also great at writing a vibrant setting that feels understandable and self-contained but hints at a larger world with fantastic creatures, secrets, and adventures waiting to be discovered. If you’re a fan of Dungeons & Dragons, you’ll enjoy the references and influences in the novel, but it’s not a requirement. I only know bits and pieces from cultural osmosis, which got me a couple of chuckles and “Oh, I get it!” moments, but this didn’t spoil my reading. Overall, I highly recommend The Reality Shaper.
