The Rebirth by V. P. Evans sees Dermot Walsh murdered after a lifetime of committing countless crimes. Before he dies, he sends a message to Jason Roneros about his murder. Jason had made a deal ten years ago with an organization named Imperatores to save Walsh’s life; he decides now is the perfect time to expose them. Jason has a hard disk containing documents and his memoir, including names, meetings, and events documenting his activities whilst working for this organization. The Imperatores are now after Jason to get hold of this hard disk. Ten years ago, Mark’s father and son were killed by the Imperatores. At the time, Mark was part of Jason’s security detail. He decides to find Jason before the Imperatores and the police. Jason and Mark team up against the organization to expose them and unlock the darkest scandal in history.

I was captivated by The Rebirth from the beginning. V. P. Evans handled the sensitive topics of divorce and drug abuse superbly. The plot was complicated and executed brilliantly; there were suitable action and suspense scenes to keep me reading. All the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, and I found the story engaging; I never knew what to expect next. The characters were well-developed and authentic. They were unique, and each had traits that made them stand out. The story was excellently written and although there was a lot of profanity, it was authentic to the character’s personality. The tension builds up to an unexpected climax which I did not see coming, and it was a big surprise to me.

The Rebirth is a work of fiction in the conspiracy, thriller, and action subgenres. It is best suited to the mature adult reading audience owing to scenes of graphic violence, drug references, and the use of explicit language throughout. Penned by author V.P. Evans, we find ourselves immersed in the chilling lives of two men who have gone through a period of estrangement, only to be reunited by murder, conspiracy, and a mystery that will have them questioning their past, present, and future. When the pained and addicted Mark meets the reclusive and sickness-weary Jason, they soon realize their journey through the dark streets of Chicago could crack open a secret; many would rather these two men die before they uncover it.

Author V.P. Evans delivers excitement at every turn in this tense thriller novel, which starts with a gripping and intriguing premise before ramping up its murderous twists and turns with each new discovery. Whilst all of this is already so interesting and exciting for thriller fans to enjoy, the true gem of the work for me was in the care and attention to detail of Evans’s character development. I was particularly drawn to long-term sufferer Jason and his approach to pain, illness, and isolation, which was poignantly drawn and informed by his actions and emotional journey throughout the challenges of the plot. Mark was less immediately likable, but that in itself is a testament to how Evans has you taking a deep journey into his psyche and really rooting for him by the end of the book. Overall, The Rebirth is a work that offers both food for thought and high-stakes thrills, wrapped up in a highly recommend read for conspiracy fans everywhere.

The Rebirth by V.P. Evans is a thriller that centers around two men who have more in common than their backstories would suggest. Mark has already lost Roy and is now facing the very real prospect of losing Anna, Roy's mother; a woman he loves, whose life is in danger, currently staying with someone else. Jason's naive optimism allowed him to be drawn into the Rebirth based on a lie, an organization having nothing to do with their promised enlightenment. Mark and Jason have a slim opportunity to stop the Imperatores and a corrupt, deadly conspiracy that stretches beyond what has occurred to date into an uncertain future. The price is high but the pair are willing to pay with their own blood for atonement, the truth, and salvation for all.

The Rebirth by V.P. Evans can best be described as a cross between The Da Vinci Code and Rule By Secrecy. The premise is intriguing and there is little more rewarding than a chase that hinges on conspiracy, and personal salvation for the characters involved who have questionable rectitude. What sets The Rebirth apart is the incorporation of historic reasoning and its inclusion of the philosophical ideologies of some of the world's greatest minds. The drivers are Mark, losing the last of what holds him together, and Jason's knowledge of what the Imperatores are all about, which occasionally get lost in phrases that would make Yoda proud, but tie into the plot well enough to keep it flowing. This is a story with a lot to offer, with bonus points for setting its home down in the Windy City.
