The Reflection of Memory by C.L. Holland is a novella which takes us to a strange land, where some have the power to shape-shift and others have telepathic powers. Most, however, have no supernatural powers at all. This story begins with a young woman waking in a snow-covered forest, not knowing her name, where she came from, where she was going, what happened to her, or anything at all about herself. She simply had no memory of anything. What woke her was a noisy bird, but shortly after that, she finds a young man is building a fire to warm her. He offers to take her to a nearby settlement to find out if anyone knows who she is. He even offers to inquire at several surrounding settlements, but nobody in any of those places knows of a missing woman fitting her description. The story ends in a somewhat unique manner, certainly in keeping with the entire story up to that point. Does she ever learn her name? Does she find out how she came to be alone in the snowy forest? Does she ever learn what happened to her?
C.L. Holland has written at least three short story collections which I have reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed. With The Reflection of Memory, the author has proven that she can also write a compelling novella. The Reflection of Memory is a magical story. The pursuit of the woman’s memory leads us through several adventures, including some she no doubt would prefer not to have experienced. Each “adventure” draws us in, filling the reader with a sense of anxiety similar to what the woman would have felt. I would classify this as fantasy, although it could just as accurately be placed into some other category. I recommend this for fans of fantasy, and for others who might like to just “check out” the genre without committing to a 500-page tome. C.L. Holland is a master of the writing craft. Reading her work is a treat you will be happy to experience.
