The Republic of Reality is a young adult fantasy novel by Adam Rowan. Nothing ever seems to go right for nineteen-year-old Joseph Shields. Prone to accidents and bad luck, Joseph's life comes to an abrupt halt when he dies in his sleep after buying a second-hand toaster that ends up in flames. He finds himself waking up on a surreal island named Hyleberia, which defines the reality on Earth where humans spend their lives. Joseph learns that he has won the lottery and attained citizenship of Hyleberia, whose wonders push the boundaries of his imagination. However, not everything is as it seems. Joseph soon realizes the lurking dangers when his friend Francis is wrongfully charged with a crime he did not commit. Moreover, the Prince of Darkness is pulling the strings from the shadows.

The Republic of Reality may remind readers of the hit TV show The Good Place. Wonderfully imaginative and filled with humor and intrigue, the book is a fascinating read from beginning to end. Adam Rowan builds a uniquely creative world for readers to immerse themselves in and allows them to navigate its wonders through the point of view of a young man who feels as if bad luck follows him every step of the way. Each character brings something of their own to the story and adds to the distinct flavor of the dynamic narrative. I very much enjoyed the book and will gladly recommend it to young adult urban fantasy fans.
