The Rocky Rumble by Kate Nilson is a picture book that tells the story of Bill the Bulldozer. In the Rocky Rumble, the competing bulldozers are divided into pairs, and the team that moves all the rocks from the fixed pile before the others wins. Bill cannot wait to win the competition and be the class leader. He is well prepared, but he ends up being paired with Crawley, the slowest bulldozer in the class. Despite trying hard, Bill loses the practice rounds as his partner is not fast enough. This enrages him, making him yell at Crawley. However, when he finds Crawley crying alone in the cafeteria, he feels sorry about being harsh to him earlier. The two eventually engage in a friendly conversation, and Bill changes his mind about trading partners. When an unexpected circumstance arises at the Rocky Rumble, the team realizes they might have a chance of winning after all.
Kate Nilson’s The Rocky Rumble is a quick and fun read. Although the characters here are construction vehicles, young readers are likely to find the story relatable. This book shows how not everyone can be good at a certain thing. This might cause frustration in an individual and the ones around him, especially if they are somehow affected by his or her lack of competence. However, just like Crawley, one may perform remarkably well under different circumstances. This story can encourage youngsters to acknowledge this possibility and value a person for who they are. Keegan Thornhill’s illustrations are simple yet attractive, and they complement the text. The Rocky Rumble is recommended for children aged four to six.
