The Rogue of Darkfae City by Richard T. Drake is the first novel in the Wardens of Lor series. It begins with Kado Tacano, a poor orphaned street thief tasked with hunting down an evil creature, a job assigned to his gang by their overlord, Darganon. Upon finding this creature, Kado cannot destroy what appears to be an innocent, helpless young creature not from their world. So, he defies orders and risks his life, fleeing to a mystical realm where he discovers he may have more control over helping his people and this creature than he initially believed. He then starts to question if there is more to this young creature’s existence than he first realized, as he and his companions constantly try to stay one step ahead of Darganon from assuming the rank of a god.
I loved reading The Rogue of Darkfae City. Richard T. Drake has a writing style that captivates and you do not want to put the story down. Each scene was so creatively written and easy to understand, especially some of the descriptions of the action sequences, which, in my experience, can get too bogged down with details and descriptions. What should have been boring, like the descriptions of clothing or weapons, was fascinating and interested me to learn more about this world and its inhabitants. The concept of the story was so well-developed. The world-building and the plot, in general, are just phenomenal. The author kept me on my toes and craving more. I did not want this story to end.
