The Sacred Band of Thebes by Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker is a colorful, action-packed graphic novel that highlights an elite group of Theban soldiers formed around the 4th century BCE. The concept was first introduced by Plato, who suggested that soldiers who were also lovers would be undefeatable in battle, as each soldier would gladly die for his lover and brother in arms. The Band of Thebes proved its success at Leuctra against the Spartans but was ultimately destroyed by Philip II of Macedon and his teenage son Alexander (later the Great) at Chaeronea. This graphic novel follows the stories of two such boys who were plucked from their village to be trained into feared Theban warriors: Androkles and Kallistos. Both boys were forcibly stolen from their parents to join the elite Band of Thebes, and both grew to become warriors and leaders of the Band. Androkles and Kallistos were seven years old and already best friends when their mothers were murdered in front of them, and they were snatched by the Band. Growing ever closer as brothers but not as lovers, they would still gladly die for each other.

I didn’t realize The Sacred Band of Thebes was a graphic novel, but I am glad I didn’t miss out on an excellent, wonderfully illustrated story. As a history buff, I love reading accounts of those early wars involving Greece, Sparta, Thebes, Macedon, and the like, but this type of story adds a wonderful visual element to the inherent stories of warfare, brotherhood, courage, and love. Authors Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker have constructed a solid tale of the bond between two young boys who became two great warriors. I appreciated Kallistos’ unwillingness to embrace the full concept of comradely love to include physical love. The consequent side-arc of his love for Elpida added depth and breadth to a story principally about war and warriors. Of course, the couple naming their first son Androkles cemented the deep bond the pair had forged as children and adults. The illustrations are wonderful, graphic to an extreme, and an integral part of an excellent package. If graphic novels are your thing, this is definitely for you, but if you are a graphic-novel neophyte, then I recommend you jump in with both feet and give this book a try. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.

The Sacred Band of Thebes by Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker is a historical graphic novel set in ancient Greece, charting the rise and fall of an elite military unit made up of 300 soldiers bound by loyalty and love. The narrative follows Androkles and Kallistos, close friends who join the Sacred Band at a young age, then grow into respected, battle-tested warriors through war, loss, and brotherhood. Readers watch them endure brutal training, face their first battles, and live by a strict code that binds them to fight beside the one they love most. As the band wins major victories against Sparta, the story also shows their personal lives, relationships, and sacrifices. Over time, a new threat rises as Macedon grows stronger under Philip II and his son, Alexander. As war looms closer, the future of the Sacred Band becomes uncertain—can devotion and unity withstand overwhelming force in the end?

The Sacred Band of Thebes is rooted in history, combining real events with personal stories. The engaging prose moves the story forward smoothly, while the artwork offers emotional impact, particularly during the battles and softer moments between characters. The ancient Greek setting gives a strong sense of tradition, duty, and the expectations left behind by the past. The characters grow naturally, shaped by training, loss, and responsibility rather than sudden changes. At its core, the book explores loyalty, sacrifice, and how love can exist within discipline and warfare. Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker handle the material with care, blending historical knowledge with an obvious interest in the people behind the legend. Overall, the book is respectful and carefully researched. Readers interested in history, military stories, or graphic novels with emotional substance will find this a strong and memorable read.

The Sacred Band of Thebes by Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker is a graphic novel set against the background of the actual historical events of an elite military group in ancient Greece. The Sacred Band of Thebes consisted of 150 pairs of male lover warriors who battled side by side and back to back. What made them so great was that they fought with the idea that they would do anything to protect their lover, who fought alongside them. In 371 BC, they helped defeat the great Spartan army, ending Spartan military supremacy. In this novel, readers follow Androkles and Kallistos, who were taken from their village at age seven and trained to be warriors. As they grow older, they become not lovers, but fight together as brothers. Both are set to become great leaders in the Sacred Band and will willingly give their lives for each other.

The historical nature of The Sacred Band of Thebes makes this graphic novel even more interesting and intriguing. This history is perhaps the most exciting thing I have learned, and the novel does justice to and honors the warriors of the Sacred Band. The illustrations, colors, lettering, and design are on point, and the vivid depictions of battles and other events truly blend well with the story: bloody and violent at times; empathetic and emotionally charged on the other hand. The story of brotherly love between Androkles and Kallistos adds elements of personhood, mortality, and vulnerability, and I enjoyed the contrast of ferocious warriors as humans with fallibility. Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker offer readers a highly entertaining graphic novel, and the different elements effectively blend into an outstanding and exhilarating read.

The band of Thebes consisted of three hundred warriors who fought with the strength of thousands. These fighting legends had never lost a battle in forty years, and now these warriors led thousands of men from Athens and Thebes against thirty thousand Macedonian invaders under the leadership of the warrior king Phillip II. Phillip is also accompanied by his son, Alexander. Phillip had been held captive in Thebes and had been trained in warfare by the sacred band. At Phillip's command, the troops go into battle, and the Athenians are first to fall as the Macedonians are using a new weapon, the long Sarissa pike. It is up to the sacred band, who are under the leadership of Androkles and Kallistos, to save Greece. How will events unfold in The Sacred Band of Thebes by Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker?

The Sacred Band of Thebes by Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker is a wonderful read, with well-crafted dialogues that bring the story and characters to life. It piqued my curiosity about the history of the Greek city-states and mythology. This thought-provoking work also prompted me to consider how the culture and training of the young boys shaped their development as adults. The authors ensured the pacing was steady, keeping readers intrigued and eager to discover the next twist in the plot. The illustrations did not disappoint either; they added to the overall beauty of the work. The reader will also appreciate the easy-to-understand language used, which makes the work accessible to all readers. This is a good book, and I look forward to reading something else by these talented authors.

Kallistos and Androkles were stolen from their homes as children and forcibly conscripted into the Theban military's most famous unit. With a rigid regimen of physical training as their daily diet, the boys grow up to become strapping young men and leaders within the close-knit group. Despite their change of fortunes, old wounds refuse to heal for them, and as time goes by, Androkles plots his revenge for what he considers unforgivable wrongs. With all this going on around them, they must still keep an eye on the unstable political situation between the city-state and its well-known Spartan rivals. Meanwhile, a new threat rises from Macedon, one with uncomfortable ties to the band, ties that may lead to the destruction of this band of fighting brothers in Glenn Rabney's and Bart Baker's The Sacred Band of Thebes.

Glenn Rabney and Bart Baker reimagine the exploits of one of the most famous fighting units in classic Hellenic history in this graphic novel. Perceptive readers will appreciate how he seamlessly merges fact with logic, immersing them in the narrative as he skillfully teases the possibility that some men in the unit may have had secret social lives. Military fiction enthusiasts will appreciate the attention to detail in the tactics employed by the different factions in the battles. The author complements a descriptive narrative style with vivid and colorful illustrations. The straightforward dialogue perfectly complements a graduated pace. He tops these aspects off with a romantic subplot that genre purists will thoroughly enjoy. Rabney's and Baker's beautiful delivery in The Sacred Band of Thebes creates an entertaining graphic novel that readers will not want to put down.
