Book One of The Demon Door Series: The Sand Prince took me totally by surprise. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was certainly not this rich, textured tale of magic and wonder. I loved it. This is one of the most complex creations I have read in a long time. A world where humans and demons both wield powerful magic. A world of lies, intrigue, and treachery. Everyone, from the top of society to the very bottom, is trying to fit in. But what if there is no way that you can fit in? What if you are something entirely different? But what if, even though you are different, something that would normally be shunned, a place is made for you because your mother is the queen? This is the situation for Rhuun, the half demon-half human son of the queen of Mistra.

I like that he is a misfit. I like that he is a half breed. I like that he is a bastard. Kim Alexander has created a great story, with a host of complex and wonderful characters. Rhuun is special enough, but when you think about the kind of princess who would let herself be seduced and loved by someone from another world, another species even, and then not only chooses to have the child under the harshest of circumstances but chooses to raise it as the heir to the throne, then you get a glimpse of just how special his mother is. They are quite the pair and their adventures are a tribute to the storytelling ability of Kim Alexander. This will be a series to follow.
