The Scry's the Limit by Ada Bell is the second book in the Shady Grove Psychic Mystery series. Aly's whole world changed after she moved in with her brother, following the death of his wife, so she could help take care of her young nephew. She started college classes and accepted a new job at an antiques store where she discovered she had psychic abilities... and an attraction to her boss's son. Now that she's gotten some control of her new abilities, she can use them to solve the murder of her sister-in-law. Her brother doesn't want her to pry into it and blames himself so it's up to her to find the answers herself. Her investigation is uprooted when she goes hiking with her brother and they discover her professor's body. Aly knows the killer is someone close and she's determined to use her abilities to find out who they are.
This mystery is Aly's driving focus; she is determined to solve the murder of her professor by investigating those around her. Ada Bell has created a character you can easily relate to in Aly as she's trying to keep her family together, go to school, and find her own path. The tone of the mystery is akin to a coming-of-age story with her college classes, job, and psychic powers. Each of the mysteries serves as another notch in her self-discovery as she's growing into becoming a psychic sleuth and finding she has a gift to help people. Bell also delves further into Aly's attraction to Sam, her boss's son. This connection is rooted in their friendship with their relationship growing in a sweet and slow build-up. She's a multifaceted character that is pulled in a variety of directions as an aunt, sister, student, employee, and psychic and with each part of her, she gives her all. At the root of her being is the desire to help others and it's clear this is just the start of her journey, which creates an exciting possibility for further mysteries. The Scry's the Limit is a delightful mystery with a blend of charm and humor that brings to life a coming-of-age journey with psychic abilities, murder, and the struggles of college life.
